The total service value of surveying and mapping produced by the surveying and mapping sectors reached 2 billion yuan (~US$ 241.633 million). 166,000 sheets of digital topographic maps, 570,000 sheets of simulated topographic maps of various types, 71,000 geodetic points and 1.01 million sheets of aerial photographs were provided to the society. 2,118 kinds of maps and books of administrative divisions, education and tourism were compiled and published, with a total of 128 million copies (sheets). Databases of 1:50,000 national digital orthophotomaps and land cover were built up. Collection of vector data for 1:50,000 line maps was completed fully. Nearly 1.1 million square kilometers of national basic aerial photography were completed.
Approved by the State Council, the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People¡¯s Republic of China and the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping jointly published the ¡°1:1,000,000 Atlas Drawn up to the Standards of Boundaries of Provincial-Level Administrative Divisions of the People's Republic of China" and ¡°1:4,000,000 Maps Drawn up to the Standards of Boundaries of Provincial-Level Administrative Divisions of the People¡¯s Republic of China¡±. Patterns of the map of China used in various media and teaching and guidance materials were examined. Imported and exported map products were examined selectively, and nearly 100,000 illegal map products were taken over. 22 first-rank and 934 second-, third- and fourth-rank qualified surveying and mapping institutions were established in 2004.
The project for Research on Surface Digital Multidimensional Dynamic Modelling won the National Natural Sciences Prize, Second Class. The projects both for Research and Application of High-Precision and High-Resolution Quasi-geoidal Technology and for Development of Geographic Space IT Resources and Application of Their Technology to Production won the State Scientific and Technological Progress Prize, Second Class. A key laboratory of modern engineering survey was established under the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping.
